First edition, very good + cloth hardcover shows mild shelf wear, name at top of front pastedown, paperclip indent at top edge of front handful pages and some other light trace wear, in very good dust jacket (price at flap) that shows soil , bit of light staining, rubbing and edgewear that includes closed tears and small open chips. 379 pages with black & whites, notes, index and endpaper maps. Still an attractive copy in jacket of this look at the Secretary of the Navy during the 1860s in the Lincoln and Johnson administrations.
